What is the difference between a bid and a ask?

The bid is the highest price at which someone is willing to buy the security, the ask or offer is the lowest price at which someone is willing to sell it. Together, the bid and ask make up the price quote, with the distance between the bid-ask spread is an indicator of a security's liquidity (the tighter the spread, the more liquid).

More than one buyer can bid a higher amount than the bid price. Sellers can’t quote lower than the ask price, as the order will simply execute at the lowest possible price. The bid price is known in the market as the ‘sellers’ rate’. That’s because if a trader sells as stock, they will get the latest available bid price.
